An old interview of Full Duplex

Fullduplex talking about 30stm
Artbreak Magazine met the German electro-rock band "Fullduplex" for an interview on the 22nd February in Berlin.
They have been opening act for 30 Seconds to Mars during the European Tour in February and May.

Last year you have been opening act for “30 Seconds to Mars”. What lead to this collaboration?
Frank: Not a big deal. I know that it was already written on the page, but I repeat myself, if necessary. We owe it to Jared (Leto), and of course the band, because they decided it to together. For a movie shoot, Jared has been to Berlin, and one night he went out with friends from LA, visiting the „White Trash“. That’s where we played. He liked it. Afterwards he told us that he thinks our music is great, and he rarely gets attached to a band like that. Sometime later, we were asked to join them as opening act on their European tour. Of course, we couldn’t turn down this chance.
Randy: We only thought that it was a mistake. We couldn’t imagine it. We have to admit, at that time we didn’t really know the band.
Frank: Of course, we knew Jared, but „30 Seconds to Mars“…
Randy: Shame on us, we didn’t know them.

What do you think about “30 Seconds to Mars” now?
Randy: I really like them. I have to say, it’s not exactly the music I usually listen to, but I really think it’s great. I really dig what they are doing.
Frank: We have been watching eight concerts in a row more or less, also depending on our condition. They have awesome tracks, great productions. It’s not the music I prefer in private, but it’s well produced. Very cool. I have a great respect for it.

What does a usual day on tour look like?
Randy: 10 hour journey, 10 hours of sitting in the car, 10 hours waiting for 10 minutes of fame.
Frank: 2 minutes for sound check.
Randy: And the time afterwards… Of course, it was the first time for us, doing it on such a large scale. We have played for 400 people, but not in front of 8000, like in Paris; it was something totally different. All the more, because you don’t know how the people react to what we do. Therefore it was quite a thrill.

There are rumors you will work with “30 Seconds to Mars” again. Is it true?
Frank: There are many. We neither want to deny nor confirm it. Certainly there will be some surprises in this context, but let’s say it like this: Jared has many, crazy ideas and we, just like you, let us surprise what may come.

Tibetain Monks

We did just get to participate in a interesting activity with 30 Seconds to Mars (a rock group). They had us over to their place to visit and record some of the monks chants. They were really wonderful and we had a great time with them. Geshe Kelsang (our chant master) came up with a chant that they may put into one of the songs on their new album so that was exciting. I will let you know if it makes it. Personally I was impressed with their commitment to environmentalism. Their last tour was a “green tour” and they have incorporated global warming awareness into their music videos. Here is the link to one – A Beautiful Lie. All and all it was a lot of fun working with them and discussing world issues. Here a few pictures:

The War is Coming

New Studio Album ‘THIS IS WAR' set to hit November 24 on EMI’s Virgin Records

The Face of Mars Cover Campaign Starts September 11th

First Single “Kings and Queens” at Modern Rock Radio Early Oct

Los Angeles, CA – September 11, 2009 – Following up on their incredibly successful sophomore release, A Beautiful Lie, multi-platinum rock band Thirty Seconds To Mars are hard at work on their highly anticipated upcoming record, “THIS IS WAR” (EMI’s Virgin Records) set to hit on November 24th. The album was produced by Flood (U2, Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails), Steve Lillywhite (The Rolling Stones, U2) and Thirty Seconds To Mars. First single Kings and Queens at modern rock radio early next month. Fall tour dates will be announced in the coming weeks.

In an innovative and exciting move, Thirty Seconds to Mars’ upcoming release, This Is War, will have 2000 different album covers featuring individual photos of fans from around the world. Starting Friday, September 11th at 12pm PDT fans will be able to submit photos to be used for the covers by pointing their browser to http://www.thirtysecondstomars.com. The first 2000 photos to be uploaded that follow the proper specifications will become album covers. The campaign will run until 2000 usable covers have been uploaded to thefaceofmars@gmail.com.

Thirty Seconds To Mars’ Jared Leto (vocals, guitar, songwriter), Shannon Leto (drums) and Tomo Miličević (guitar) teamed up with their fan community, The Echelon, earlier this year to record sounds for the upcoming record in a groundbreaking event they dubbed, “The Summit”. The band invited The Echelon members to travel to Los Angeles to take part in an impromptu recording session at Hollywood’s Avalon Club. It was so successful that since then Thirty Seconds to Mars decided to hold summits in 8 more countries across the world (Australia, Italy, Germany, France, Japan, Mexico, United Kingdom, Canada) in order to give their biggest supporters an opportunity to be a part of their new album.

With over 100 million views on YouTube, 40 million plays on MySpace and more than one million fans on iLike/Facebook, Thirty Seconds To Mars have always been quick to embrace digital culture and with the immense success they had with The Summit, decided to use that same digital technology to offer their fans a chance to get involved in the record making process through Twitter as well. The Digital Summit kicked off on Monday, August 10th and through the twitvid.com technology allowed fans to record sounds and vocals from their personal computers and mobile devices for inclusion on the album. The Digital Summit was a top 10 trending topic on Twitter during the two week promotion, garnering sixty thousand page views and 3000 unique sound recordings submitted from fans across the world.

Formed by brothers Jared and Shannon Leto, Thirty Seconds to Mars have won numerous awards and accolades, including an MTV Video Music Award, three MTV EMA’s, an MTV Latin and Asia Award, a Fuse Award, and three Kerrang! Awards. Thirty Seconds to Mars’ sophomore record, A Beautiful Lie hit platinum status after almost two years of heavy touring and winning fans over, one by one. The media caught on too, Alternative Press raved that the band "...just might be rock's best-kept secret. He [Jared Leto] sings with a range and ease that makes cathedrals jealous" while the Washington Post exclaimed, "hard-driving guitar riffs and powerful vocals carry this head banging outfit all the way to the rock-race finish line." The record spawned two Top 5 Modern Rock singles, From Yesterday and The Kill and the latter set a radio record for the longest-running hit in the history of Modern Rock radio play when it remained on the national airplay chart for more than 50 weeks following its & peak in 2006. From Yesterday was the band’s first <>A Beautiful Lie, including major festival shows like Lollapalooza in the United States, Holland’s Pinkpop Festival and Japan’s Summer Sonic, which has earned them a growing, loyal, global fan base.

Buzznet

Exclusive: 30 Seconds To Mars Reveal Album Title

After 18 months of work, 30 Seconds to Mars are closing in on the release of an album that includes Tibetan monks, a screaming hawk, and the voices of fans' from eight countries along with Jared Leto's soaring vocals. Now that album has a title: 30 Seconds to Mars confirmed exclusively to Buzznet that the hugely anticipated project will be called This Is War.

Long the working title of the album, This Is War was not locked in until the band members agreed on it in their Los Angeles work space the other day.The title early on appeared closely tied to the battles the band found itself fighting, most prominently a lengthy legal fight with its record label, Virgin Records. But Leto has always said it encapsulated far more, including the spirit of the band's whole creative process.

"It's representative of the battles that we were fighting, us with the record label, creative battles, personal demons," he told Buzznet. "We've discussed, like, is it relevant anymore? Some of the battles - obviously the creative, and the battles with the record label, have all come to pass, but I think it really still represents this record in the best way possible, so we're sticking with This Is War.... It represents too clearly this period of time in our lives."

He added that the title does not have to literally refer to any specific fight. "Also come the ideas about winning, ideas about compromise, about defeat, victory of course. But I think as I've tossed it around, it's always been the working title for the record as well, This Is War, so it's been important because I think it really represented the goal in a good way, a strong way."

Part of the goal for the band as it prepared it's first album in four years appears to have been a dramatic expansion of its sound. (The album includes production from Flood, among others). Tracks from the album, which Leto played for Buzznet, include an emphasis on synths, heavy drums, and the constant presence of the band's own fans, recorded in specially organized "summits" held around the world. Filled with what are essentially field recordings of fandom, the album seems almost custom-built to be played live.

Highlights include:

Night of the Hunter: Leto says the band was attempting "a collision of the small, the intimate, the minimal agains tthe grandiose and the bombastic." The song spans both the soft voice of a French girl counting "Une, deux, trois... cinq," to Leto's high vocal lines against a stark backdrop.

Kings and Queens: Opening with a wild hawk scream, recorded live over the band's work space, the song includes a heavy contribution from the band's fans, captured singing a chorus created from layers of the band's "summit" recordings. Leto said the title and theme were inspired by a book found at the band's South African work space, but that it "ended up being a good metaphor" for world events from the past year.

Hurricane: Already generating online buzz because of the somewhat surprising inclusion of a cameo from Kanye West, the song sizzles with electronics and represents one of the biggest departures from the band's previous music. West sings "I need a heartbeat" over Leto's own vocals to powerful sonic effect.

But as Leto explained, the band's intention is not for fans to hear singles, but a complete work. Asked about recent comments from Radiohead's Thom Yorke, who suggested recently that his band would not record full-length albums again anytime soon, Leto indicated he doesn't necessarily agree.

"To me, the songs are like scenes in a film or chapters in a book and they kind of work with each other in a way that they don't work and would never work separately," he said. Listening to This Is War in full, he said, "would be the best way to understand and to get the best sense of what the intentions were."
